“My first reaction to being diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes was pure, unadulterated fear! I had far too many friends and relatives who were victims to the disease with lost digits, dialysis, even blindness. In my panic, I started on oral medication and followed a restrictive, low-calorie, completely carbohydrate-free diet to lose weight and get my blood sugar under control. The result was less than spectacular, on both counts – my numbers were still fairly high and I wasn’t really losing weight.

My doctor recommended that I make an appointment with Gretchen Scalpi, a Certified Diabetes Educator. Gretchen helped me to understand why my starvation diet wasn’t working; in fact, I could actually lose weight by eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising regularly! Now, more than one year later, I have lost nearly fifty pounds and my blood sugars are close to normal levels. The endocrinologist has now halved the dosage of my oral medication and, if I can continue to lose weight while maintaining my current numbers, he may discontinue the medication completely. Gretchen’s support and guidance were critical to me in gaining control of my health. I strongly recommend her to anyone who has questions about diet, exercise or diabetes.”
